Synthetic fabrics and blends have the ability to add both function and longevity to garments – but we believe in using the right materials in the right way. A responsibly-designed item using synthetic materials that enhance comfort and function can actually help you purchase less in the long run.
Tencel™ (Lyocell)
Tencel™ (generically known as a Lyocell) is a man-made synthetic fabric. Sustainably sourced from eucalyptus trees, the raw materials are converted to wood cellulose in a closed-loop process that minimises waste and pollution. The Tencel® trademark from Lenzing AG ensures that the lyocell material has been sourced and produced under stringent environmental standards.
Clothing made from Lyocell is a win from both environmental, cost and style perspectives:
- It’s as breathable as cotton
- Its handfeel rivals the softness and smoothness of silk
- Its fiber elasticity makes it strong and durable
- It is conveniently suitable for machine washing at home
- Its elegant drape allows designers to design garments for everyday life – without sacrificing style and sophistication
Polyester & Nylon
Since we do believe in the purposeful use of synthetic fabrics for function and longevity, here are some reasons we believe it’s worth crafting select garments with Polyester or Nylon:
- They're durable and can be machine washed and dried
- They have the potential to be recycled almost endlessly
Currently recycled polyester and nylon are specialty fibers with minimum production requirements that are often out of reach for small brands. As global demand increases for recycled fabrics, the Textile Exchange forecasts by 2030 that 20% of all polyester produced will be recycled polyester. We look forward to increased accessibility of this sustainable option soon.
Bamboo Viscose
Viscose is a man-made cellulosic fiber that has risen in popularity due to its appealing softness combined with low prices.
As always, you get what you pay for. Cheap, fast-fashion viscose is often produced through a chemically-intensive process, and with poor quality that fails to stand up to more than a few washes. High-quality viscose used by designer brands will have longer, stronger fibers that last.
Our Bamboo Viscose has been produced through an OEKO-tex certified process that ensures the fabric is kind to your skin and the planet. There are so many reasons we love this fabric:
- Bamboo is a low-impact resource that grows quickly with little water or fertilizer
- Its cloud-like softness feels like second skin
- It’s wrinkle-resistant
- It’s breathable and anti-odor
- It is conveniently suitable for machine washing at home
